Host Analytics has rolled out their Fall 2017 Feature Release, with new features and functionality enhancements. Below is a summary describing each new feature for Modeling.
Spotlight: Model Manager
The new Model Manager in Spotlight provides functionality and convenience.
Users access the Model Manager through the web version of Spotlight. Users are now able to perform tasks that were previously not possible, such as running multiple tabs at a time, running calculations while performing development in SpotlightXL, and updating metadata via the web.
The Model Manager provides a graphical view, as shown below, of how models relate to each other, where there are dependencies between the models, and how the segment hierarchies are organized.

Spotlight: Model Maintenance
Previously, users needed to clear and regenerate models in order to delete a dimension member/attribute. With the new updates, users can now eliminate that step and are now able to delete the dimension members/attributes in a locked model without clearing or regenerating the model. When these metadata members are deleted, their respective data will also be deleted.
Additionally, members can be updated after locking the model, but note that the rollup level data will be deleted in the process.
View and Report Changes to Saving Data
Users are now prompted upon trying to save changes to rollup members in a View or a Report, which applies to both Spotlight and SpotlightXL. If a user tries to save data to rollup members, a message will appear stating that the changes have not been saved and any calculations that were set to run after saving will also not be executed.
Views Saving/Loading times are now better optimized: improving performance and decreasing the time used.
View and Report Permissions
The View and Report permissions are clarified to reflect the operations that different types of users are allowed to perform. The general permissions are as follows:
- Admins can use views and reports unconditionally.
- Designers and Reviewers needs permission to access the model before they have access to the view/report
- A Designer or Reviewer can access that view or report as long as they have permissions for the model.
Most information on the variations of operations that each type of user can perform is found in the Host Analytics Modeling Release Notes.
Metadata Viewer in the Report Run Task
Metadata Viewer is now available to provide information about the model and dimensions that make up the SpotlightXL cells in a report. It is similar to the Design Manager in the Report Design Task except that the Metadata Viewer is view-only, which means users will not be able to modify/edit dimension member values.
With this feature, dimension members can be filtered, if desired, to view which cells are associated with a specified member. And, multiple models can be also be viewed if data cells from the model retrieves data from multiple models.
Improvements to Excel-based Reports
Snapshot reports are introduced for Excel-based Reports, which allows users to fine-tune a report for third-party users without a live connection to Modeling. This format removes any SpotlightXL formulas from the report: Data values are shown as regular numbers and Metadata values are shown as regular text.
ClickOnce installer will now update automatically.
